Chrysler Posts Q1 Operating Profit after 2009 Bankruptcy

Chrysler Group said it posted a $143 million operating profit in the first three months of the year after cutting costs and introducing a big pickup.

Revenue rose to $9.69 billion in the first quarter, up 2.7 percent from the final three months of 2009, the automaker said in a statement. Chrysler reported a net loss of $197 million in the first quarter, compared with a net loss of $2.69 billion in the final three months of last year.

After emerging from bankruptcy June 10 through the end of 2009, Chrysler said it lost $3.8 billion on revenue of $17.7 billion. Fiat S.p.A. obtained a 20 percent stake in Chrysler after the company reorganized in Chapter 11 with $15 billion in government support.

"This positive operating result in the first quarter is a concrete indication to our customers, dealers and suppliers that the 2010 targets we have set for ourselves are achievable," Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler, said in the statement. "We are also generating cash to finance the investments being made in our product portfolio and brand repositioning."

The 2010 Dodge Ram full-size pickup is a very modern and comfortable take on the traditional big truck platform. Four Chrysler Group LLC vehicles have earned 2010 Top Safety Pick Status. Chrysler Group announced today that the 2010 Dodge Journey, the 2010 Chrysler Sebring when equipped with available Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the 2010 Dodge Avenger when equipped with available ESC and the 2010 Jeep® Patriot with available seat mounted air bag, are 2010 Top Safety Picks according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger and Dodge Journey have been awarded IIHS Top Safety Picks for both the 2009 and 2010 model years. The 2010 Jeep Patriot joins the trio in the highest possible rating from the nonprofit research organization.

For the 2010 model year, Chrysler Group products comprise almost 15 percent of the total vehicles awarded Top Safety Pick status by the IIHS to automakers. The 2010 Jeep® Patriot, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010 Dodge Avenger and 2010 Dodge Journey encompass a two-fold approach to safety—passive features combined with accident-avoidance features. Available safety and security features on all four vehicles include ESC with traction control, Brake Assist and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), driver and front-passenger active head restraints, front seat-mounted side airbags and advanced multi-stage front airbags.

Dodge Ram Pickups Show Big Improvements

The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups are all business, serious business.
They are the pair of Dodges that feel more like trucks and less like pickups.
But for the 2010 model year, these big rigs -- in all five trim levels -- finally offer interiors and exteriors that are executive worthy, though the truck has blue collar roots. But now architects can finally arrive on job sites in the same vehicle the crews they hire use.

Following the successful launch of the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, it was only a matter of time before the brand's heavy-duty trucks adopted the same looks, which are stunningly better. Fortunately for Dodge, that time came sooner. These trucks look great. The big front grille is canted to make the top stick out a little farther than the bottom. It's a bull ready to charge.

From the front, the face is menacing and strong. The big fenders push out and provide wide shoulders and a distinctive look. The lines are robust and curvy, and from every angle, it looks muscle bound. The back offers a spoiler-like shape to the liftgate. This hides the gate's handle and puts your hand in the perfect place to lower it. There's also a giant Ram logo, something many within Dodge refer to as "home plate."

The trucks come with one of two proven powerful engines, the 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi or the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel, a beef cake of a six-cylinder engine that produces 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. However, there's very little with this diesel that feels diesel-ish. It provides excellent pickup onto the highway and enough power to tow a small village. The engines, while not new to the 2500 and 3500, have been tweaked and tuned to provide even more power.

'Big, but smooth drive'

Despite the big engines and leaf spring suspension, the ride was surprisingly smooth and quiet. It still feels big, but it should. It may not be the easiest vehicle to park at a Meijer parking lot, but it can pull a horse trailer across the country. Different cars, different jobs.

While I have no need for a heavy-duty truck, I appreciate those people who do. Some are the weekend boat towers but most are everyday workers who haul lumber, cement mixers, asphalt kettles and just about everything else that holds our world together.

Now, they can do it a little quieter and a little cleaner. When Dodge brought out its new Cummins diesel engine, it ensured that it would meet future emission requirements. With 2010 rules taking effect, the 6.7-liter diesel is ready.

Also, there's no tick, tick, ticking of the injectors leaking into the cabin. And even with the bed empty, the 2500 diesel I drove felt sure footed and provided a good ride on its retuned suspension. I was assured by engineers it gets even better with a few thousand pounds in the back.
Sure enough, later in the day, when I towed a few thousand pounds, the big Rams never flinched.
Dodge also has made an exhaust brake standard on the diesel models. This system helps use the engine to slow the vehicle down and is very helpful when hauling heavy loads by reducing brake fade down big hills. There's also an integrated trailer brake on the dash, though it is mounted left of the steering wheel and would feel more natural on the right hand side.

'In pickups, size matters'

The new heavy-duty pickups come with loads of new features, such as heated and ventilated seats, automatic climate controls, adjustable pedals and 42 storage spaces throughout the cabin. There are even little cubbies under the floor mats in the second row -- like the ones found on minivans. These are the kind of features that can win truck buyers.

Most of all, the seats are comfortable. I found the seats in the previous-generation Ram heavy-duty trucks tough on my back. It's as if the lower back support was fabricated out of plywood. These new seats feel like La-Z-Boy designed them.

There are all of the high tech features too. There's Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operations, a navigation system and most of the other features you'd expect in a luxury car. This one can just carry more stuff.

Dodge eliminated the Quad Cab versions with this model year. Instead, it will offer Crew Cabs and the Mega Cab models, as well as a standard body pickup. The Crew cab adds room to accommodate five people and the Mega Cab -- with its reclining second row -- feels like a football team could fit back there.

Despite what you may have heard, in the pickup world, size matters. And these new Rams are big enough to hang with even the biggest competition.

All customers can save up to $4,500 off a new vehicle, even without a "clunker" trade-in at T&C's Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Wilsonville.

T&C's Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Wilsonville expands the savings opportunity of the U.S. Government's Car Allowance Rebate Systems (CARS), more commonly known as "Cash for Clunkers," by offering up to $4,500 off an eligible new car purchase whether or not customers bring in qualifying "clunkers."

"The 'Cash for Clunkers' program is a great way to get old, gas-guzzling vehicles off the road," said Matt Howell, General Sales Manager. "We found a way to make it better by offering the same savings even if a trade-in doesn’t meet the official 'clunker' definition.

"If the trade-in is a qualifying 'clunker,' then we will add to the government's rebate for a total savings up to $9,000. We call it "Double Ca$h for Your Old Car.'"

The Administration established the CARS program to help consumers replace older, gas guzzling vehicles with new, more fuel-efficient vehicles and to help stimulate the national economy.

The government credit is $3,500 or $4,500 depending on the amount of fuel economy improvement between the old and new vehicle.

Important points for consumers to know about CARS include the following:
- Vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
- Only new vehicle purchases qualify
- Generally, trade-in vehicle must get less than 18 mpg and new vehicles must meet certain fuel economy requirements
- Trade-in vehicle must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in date
- The program ends Nov. 1, 2009 or when the government funds are exhausted (whichever comes first)

"Many drivers want a fuel-efficient new vehicle,'" Howell said. "But, some customers are discovering their old vehicle doesn’t guzzle enough gas to meet the government's 'clunker' guidelines."

Two Chrysler Group LLC vehicles are on AutoPacific's 2009 Ideal Vehicle list. According to the survey released today, owners of the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Challenger say they are driving a vehicle that meets, or even exceeds, their expectations, meaning those vehicles are perfect just the way they are.

Chrysler Group improves Total Quality score by 15 points

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 ranks at the top of the full-size truck segment in Strategic Vision Inc.'s (SVI) 2009 Total Quality Index (TQI). According to the survey released today, the Dodge Ram leads the way with the highest Total Quality score of any truck in the 15-year history of the study. Customers specifically noted that the Ram has the best added storage capability along with the best truck interior ever rated by customers.

"Our all-new 2009 Dodge Ram is rated by owners as the best truck ever built," said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President - Quality, Chrysler Group LLC. "It is a game-changing, class-leading truck that is second to none. This award confirms that we are making significant changes and improvements, which enhance the overall ownership experience and are being recognized by our customers."

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram features the industry's first-and-only RamBox cargo management system that includes versatile, weatherproof, lockable, illuminated, drainable storage bins; pickup bed dividers; a two-foot bed extender and a cargo rail system with sliding adjustable cleats.

The 2009 Ram also includes the first-in-segment coil-spring five-link rear suspension fitted to a solid rear axle that provides ride and handling not found on any other pickup truck. A new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with fuel-saving MDS technology provides more horsepower (390 hp) and torque (407 lb.-ft.) while its best-in-class aerodynamics (.387 Cd) improve fuel economy and performance.

The Total Quality Index asks buyers to rate all aspects of the ownership experience from buying and owning to performance and driving - much more than simply counting issues. Results from studies that measure the number of issues or the overall satisfaction of a vehicle do not measure the customers' commitment to, advocacy for or loyalty to their vehicles accurately, according to Strategic Vision.

In addition, Chrysler Group LLC improved 15 points over 2008.

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Regular, Quad and Crew Cab models recently earned Five Star ratings for driver- and front-passenger protection in a frontal crash, the highest ratings in the U.S. government's safety crash test program. The U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 is $22,170 (including $900 destination).

In addition to winning Strategic Vision's TQI, the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram has earned 17 key awards since its introduction and was recently chosen by Car and Driver as the best full-size pickup in a head-to-head comparison test in Texas, beating the 2009 Ford F-150. Other key awards include:

Statement regarding J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS)

Today, J.D. Power and Associates announced the results of their 2009 Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures new-vehicle quality at 90-days of ownership. We were pleased to learn that there are several bright spots for Chrysler Group LLC within this study, which demonstrate that the improvements we have been implementing over the past year are starting to show for the company as a whole and within each of the brands.

First, of the 10 most improved vehicles on the J.D. Power list, five of them were Chrysler Group vehicles, including the top three. The five most improved vehicles are the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Avenger, Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Liberty.

Second, the Chrysler Group improved 15 points on the survey, faster than the industry average of 10 points. The industry as a whole saw its greatest improvement since 2004. Despite this fact, Chrysler Group gained ground versus the competition.

The Jeep brand improved by 30 points and moved up three rank positions. This jump is attributable primarily to a 47 point improvement for the Jeep Wrangler.

Among the product highlights are:

Chrysler PT Cruiser, which tied for first place in the Compact Multi Activity Vehicle segment.
Chrysler Sebring (sedan and convertible), which finished fourth in the very competitive Midsize Car segment that includes such competitors as Nissan Altima, Pontiac G6, Chevy Malibu, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. In fact, when filtering out just the Chrysler Sebring sedan, it tied the Nissan Altima for first place in the segment with a score of 81 points.
Dodge Grand Caravan, which improved by 60 points and now ranks third in the midsize van category.

What the J.D. Power IQS shows us is that we have some forward momentum. We have figured out how to improve vehicles in production and have taken aggressive actions to continue that progress.

During the course of 2008 and early 2009, Chrysler Group has made tremendous progress on quality, which we can see in our internal measures. The fact is that over last year, Chrysler has reduced its warranty claims by 30 percent. Our internal metrics confirm that we are currently operating with reliability that is better than it has ever been in company history. While the improvement is encouraging, we have by no means arrived at a resting place. With the implementation of Customer Satisfaction Teams (CSTs), Customer Promoter Score (CPS) and other initiatives, we are confident that we will continue to see improvements in our vehicle quality, which will exceed the pace of improvement in the industry as we did in the 2009 IQS.

Congress OKs 'Cash for Clunkers'

WASHINGTON -- Last-minute intervention from the White House on Thursday swayed a crucial Democratic senator to rescue a $1 billion "cash for clunkers" plan to boost battered auto sales. The full bill ... cleared the Senate on a 91-5 vote and was sent to the White House for Obama's signature, likely next week. The program, which is expected to go into effect in late July or early August, would give consumers cash incentives to trade in gas guzzlers for new models with higher fuel efficiency. The program "will boost consumer confidence, get the economy going again and reduce our dependence on foreign oil," said John McEleney, [chairman] of the National Auto Dealers Association.

Fiat's plan for the Chrysler PT Cruiser

Fiat, in its infinite wisdom and foresight, has granted to keep production going on the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the U.S. automaker's compact hatchback/station wagon. The PT Cruiser was previously scheduled to end production this summer.

After a quick rinse in bankruptcy and a takeover by Italy's Fiat (which now owns a 20% stake), Chrysler will continue production of the PT Cruiser, using the model until the Fiat 500 is ready to make its North American debut.

Once production of the PT Cruiser ends, the plant will go through a six-month retooling period, during which the plant will be made ready for production the Fiat 500 and the Fiat Panda (which will be rebadged as a Jeep, according to Inside Line). As it gains access to Fiat's dealerships and Europe and Brazil, Chrysler is apparently anticipating demand for its aging, early-retro-cutesy compact car in those markets.

The index of U.S. leading economic indicators probably rose in May for a second straight month, reinforcing signs that the worst recession in five decades may end this year, economists said before a report today. Chrysler Group LLC Announces Production Start at Seven North American Assembly Plants!

One week after finalizing its global strategic alliance with Fiat Group, Chrysler Group LLC announced today that it will resume volume production of vehicles with the start up of seven of its North American assembly plants the week of June 29, 2009.

As part of a phased production ramp-up, the following assembly plants are scheduled to resume production at the end of the month:

- Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (Sterling Heights, MI) - Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger
- Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Warren, MI) - Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota
- St. Louis North Assembly Plant (Fenton, MO) - Dodge Ram
- Toledo Supplier Park (Toledo, OH) - Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
- Brampton Assembly Plant (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) - Chrysler 300,Dodge Charger and
Challenger
- Windsor Assembly Plant (Windsor, Ontario, Canada ) - Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge
Grand Caravan
- Toluca Assembly Plant (Toluca, Mexico) - Dodge Journey and Chrysler PT Cruiser

Chrysler Group's Powertrain and Stamping facilities that supply these assembly plants will also be operating. Chrysler's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which builds the Dodge Viper, resumed production on June 15. All Chrysler Group plants will be closed during a previously announced two-week Summer Break the weeks of July 13 and 20. Re-start of production at other Chrysler Group assembly plants will be announced at a later date.
