Overview

2008 marks the completion of 10 years of this SUV. Introduced in 1998 as a mid-size SUV, it was then a replacement for the Dodge Ram Charger. Evolving into a full-size SUV by 2004, this model brings for 2009 a new hybrid variant. The Durango hybrid boasts improved mileage in the range of 25 percent in highways and 40 percent in the city. Availability and production of the Hybrid trim is under consideration. For now, Chrysler plans to come out with a hybrid version of the light-duty Ram by 2010.

Power and performance

The 2009 Dodge Durango is offered in seven trims at the start of the year - the Limited HEV 4x4; Limited 4x4; Limited 4x2; SLT 4x4; SLT 4x2; SE 4x4; and the SE 4x2. While the base models SE 4x2 and SLT 4x2 come with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that delivers 210 hp and 235 lb-ft. of torque, the SE 4x4 and SLT 4x4 are given a 4.7-liter V8 that produces 303 horsepower and 330 lb ft of torque; the Limited models come with a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine that generates 376 horsepower and 401 lb-ft. of torque. A four-speed auto is standard on the SE 4x2 and SLT 4x2; a five-speed auto transmission is standard for the Limited 4x4, Limited 4x2, SLT 4x4, and the SE 4x4; while the Limited HEV 4x4 is equipped with an AHS-T RWD auto transmission. The Hybrid variant is expected to get a 5.7-liter HEMI Hybrid V8 engine that will churn out 399 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque and will be teamed to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

A choice of 17-inch steel, 18-inch aluminum, and 20-inch aluminum chrome clad wheels; premium leather-trimmed 1st and 2nd row seats; power front seats with driver seat memory; heated front seats; a variety of seating configurations across the trims; UConnect GPS; steering wheel-mounted audio controls; eight Alpine speakers with subwoofer; AM/FM stereo radio with in-dash six-disc DVD/MP3 player; UConnect studios; Sirius satellite radio; 1-year Sirius radio service; keyless entry; driver's automatically-dimming exterior mirror; air conditioning with dual zone auto temperature control; power front windows with one-touch up and down feature; power liftgate; power locks; power adjustable pedals with memory; Parkview rear back-up camera; ?low washer fluid? warning signal; vehicle information center; and fog lamps are some of the features available for the interiors and exteriors of this model.

Safety Features

The 2009 Dodge Durango's safety features include an Electronic Stability Program; regenerative four-wheel disc ABS brakes; door-ajar warning lamp; advanced multistage front air bags; supplemental side curtain air bags in all rows; and speed control among others.
